As the weather along Southern Georgian Bay begins to warm, it signals the return of gardening season. Garden centres are reopening, neighbours are back outside, and yards are slowly coming to life.

This time of year is a chance to reconnect with our outdoor spaces, but gardening doesn’t always come naturally (we know that firsthand), and a little guidance can make all the difference in creating a successful season.

Whether you’re just getting started or looking to improve your results, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite tips to help you along the way, plus a list of local garden centres in the area that are worth checking out. 👇🏻👇🏻

0.1 Pre-water your soil before planting or seeding
Most people water after planting, but dry soil can repel water and create uneven moisture. Water the bed deeply a day before planting, and your seeds and transplants will establish faster and more evenly.

0.2  Fertilize based on growth stage, not a schedule
Leafy growth = needs nitrogen. Flowering/fruiting = needs phosphorus/potassium. Feeding the wrong thing at the wrong time gives you lush leaves and no tomatoes.

0.3  Use “decoy plants” for pest control
Instead of only fighting pests, distract them. Plant things like nasturtiums or mustard nearby (they’ll often take the hit first), protecting your main crops.

0.4  Root competition is often your hidden problem
Trees and large shrubs steal water and nutrients underground far beyond their canopy. If plants struggle “mysteriously,” check what’s nearby below the surface, not just above.

0.5  Wind is a bigger factor than people think
Near Georgian Bay, especially, wind stress stunts growth and dries the soil fast. Strategic windbreaks (not solid walls, think filtered barriers like shrubs or lattice) can dramatically improve plant performance.

With a bit of planning, patience, and the right approach, gardening becomes less about guesswork and more about enjoying the process. Whether you’re experimenting, learning as you go, or refining what’s worked in seasons past, the goal is the same: a space that feels rewarding, personal, and alive.

And as you get started this season, don’t forget to explore some of the great local spots that make it all possible. Be sure to visit Riverside Greenhouses of Beaver Valley, Grey Heron Garden Centre of Meaford, Green Tree Gardens & Emporium of Collingwood, and Pine Valley Greenhouse of Flesherton for inspiration, supplies, and a little extra guidance along the way.
